English lessons at FreshSteps are vibrant and interesting and taught specifically by our headteacher. We have a dynamic approach to teaching a variety of new and exciting schemes of work that ensure the successful progression of our pupils through the Key Stages. Our programmes of study are designed to not only build on the knowledge and skills acquired in primary school, but support and challenge all learners. We differentiate accordingly and ensure that we are teaching skills that will help our pupils in the wider world. Pupils are given opportunities to develop and extend their skills in reading, writing and spoken language. We aim to nurture the pupils’ love of reading by introducing them to a range of high quality fiction and non-fiction texts that are aimed at sparking interest and imagination. We then encourage students to experiment with language in their own writing whilst mastering the essentials of literacy that will set them up for life beyond the classroom. Throughout the Key Stages we encourage lively discussion and debate through structured talk, learning to adapt language to appropriate audiences and purposes.
English lessons at FreshSteps are flourishing and offer our pupils a magnitude of resources, equipment and enrichment activities. From theatre visits and actor visits (actor Rudolph Walker has visited FreshSteps and included us in the Ruldolph Walker Inter-School Drama Award celebrations) to our brand new library and study areas, drama workshops and intervention clubs, we offer something to suit the needs of all pupils.
By the end of KS4 we have prepared our pupils for Functional Skills Level 2 in English which covers, reading, writing and speaking & listening exams. These exams are an equivalent to GCSE grade 5/6. We can also enter pupils who show exceptional capability and willingness into GCSE English Language exams. FreshSteps received a 100% pass rate in it's most recent exams in Functional Skills English.
